About the product

The fumasep® FBM is a bipolar membrane from Fumatech, made of an anion exchange layer, a cation exchange layer and a catalytic intermediate layer, reinforced with PK (polyketone). It is designed for electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM), where it splits water at the layer interface to supply H⁺ and OH⁻ ions. This makes acids and bases directly from salt solutions, without adding chemicals.

Under standard test conditions, water splitting starts at a potential difference of about 0.8 V. The membrane delivers a water splitting current above 30 mA/cm² at 1.0 V (0.5 M NaCl / 0.25 M Na₂SO₄ electrode rinse, 25 °C). The PK reinforcement gives the mechanical stability needed in multi-compartment cells and stacks.

Unlike the other membranes in our range, the FBM is supplied wet, in NaCl solution (Na⁺/Cl⁻ form), with a wet thickness of 110–160 µm. Keep the package sealed until installation and do not let the membrane dry out. The surface may look structured depending on the interface layer; this does not affect performance. Maximum operating temperature is 40 °C.

For a complete EDBM setup, the FBM can be combined with the FKB-PK cation exchange membranes, which Fumatech uses in its own FBM test cell, and the FAB-PK or FKL-PK blocking membranes.

Main application area: Bipolar membrane for EDBM; water splitting to supply H⁺ and OH⁻ for acid/base production and salt splitting.
