About the product

The fumasep® FKB-PK is a PK (polyketone)-reinforced cation exchange membrane from Fumatech for electrodialysis (ED) and electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM). It is a versatile cation exchange membrane for desalination, salt concentration and acid/base production. Fumatech also uses it as the standard CEM when characterising its FBM bipolar membrane.

It comes in two thicknesses. The 75 µm version offers very low area resistance (<2.5 Ωcm²) for energy-efficient operation. The 130 µm version (<5.0 Ωcm²) offers slightly higher selectivity (>93% vs >92%) and extra mechanical robustness. Area resistance is measured in Cl⁻ form in 0.5 M NaCl at 25 °C. The PK reinforcement gives high stability in acidic and caustic environments.

The membrane is supplied dry, in K⁺ form, and can be cut in the dry state. Before use, condition it in 0.5–1 M NaCl solution at ambient temperature until equilibrated, keeping it fully immersed. Avoid surfactants, organic substances and oxidants.

Both versions are stable across pH 0–14 at 25 °C, with an operating temperature range of 15–40 °C.

Main application area: Cation transport in ED and EDBM; desalination, salt concentration and acid/base production.
