About the product

Modular Electrolysis Cell for Versatile Flow Applications

The X-Cell is a high-performance, modular electrolysis cell designed for a wide range of electrochemical applications in flow. It is especially suited for research and development where flexibility, chemical compatibility, and ease of configuration are essential. The design allows users to adapt the cell to specific experimental needs without switching platforms. It is compatible with all our other electrochemical flow-cells, such as the S-Cell and A-Cell

Key Features and Flexibility

  • Fully modular design with interchangeable current collectors
  • Choice of flat surface or flow-field collectors, which can be combined in asymmetric configurations
  • Standard materials include nickel, stainless steel, titanium, copper, and platinum-coated titanium
  • Compatible with both ion exchange membranes and porous separators
  • Operates with a wide variety of electrolytes, including acidic, neutral, and alkaline solutions
  • Designed for high chemical resistance and minimal leaching or catalyst poisoning
  • Suitable for operation at elevated temperatures (up to 90 °C)
  • Active area options: 2.5 × 2.5 cm and 5 × 5 cm (interchangeable)

Gasket Configuration

Gasket selection depends on electrode thickness and whether flat or flow-field current collectors are used:

  • For flat collectors: both flow-field and cover gaskets are required. Flow-field gaskets should be at least 0.5 mm thick (1 mm recommended). Cover gaskets are used to fine-tune the total thickness.
  • For flow-field collectors: only cover gaskets are needed. For electrodes over 0.5 mm, use EPDM or VITON to improve sealing.

Temperature Monitoring and Control

The latest version of the X-Cell (launched April 2025) includes an integrated temperature measurement system. An aluminum sensor block is embedded in the PEEK flow body and pressed against the current collector to enable accurate temperature readings. It supports common thermometer and thermocouple sizes (3 mm, 4 mm, and 1/8″).

This system can be used in combination with a dedicated temperature control setup based on a flow heat exchanger principle. See our Temperature Control Solution.

System Integration and Instrumentation

The X-Cell integrates with a range of Redox-Flow.com test equipment:

Application Areas

The X-Cell supports a broad range of electrochemical processes, including:

  • Alkaline water electrolysis
  • PEM and AEM water electrolysis
  • CO₂ electrolysis and electrochemical reduction (see also 3-compartment X-Cell)
  • Electrochemical metal recovery and refining
  • Desalination and ion removal
  • Organic electrosynthesis and non-aqueous systems
  • Redox flow battery testing
  • General-purpose electrochemical flow testing
  • Active Area: 2.5cm x 2.5cm and 5cm x 5cm – for other active areas please make an inquiry
  • Current collectors with and without flow field – any electrode thicknesses
  • Main flow body is machined in highly corrosion resistant PEEK
  • Can be operated up to 95°C
  • Full pH range – depending on current collector and gasket materials
  • Standard materials for current collectors: Nickel, Titanium, Stainless Steel and Copper – for other materials please make an inquiry, we can do many
  • Swagelok fittings for tight connecting to 1/8” tubing – For other tubing dimensions please make a request
  • Gaskets/Spacers Materials: PTFE, EPDM or VITON

PERFORMANCE DATA

Figure below shows the polarization curve for a setup with nickel foam electrodes, 6 M KOH measured at room temperature. Here an area specific resistance of about 1.1 Ωcm2 is found and the activation voltage is about 2.2 V. This is similar to the values found in litterature recorded under similar conditions, thus the ‘relatively’ poor performance is because of the low temperature and that the electrodes are untreated (no catalysts). Thus much better performance can be obtained with higher temperature, thinner separator and treated electrodes.
