About the product

The FS-990-PK is a 90 µm PK-reinforced cation exchange membrane from Fumatech, combining very low resistance with high mechanical stability, high selectivity, and high chemical and oxidative stability. The PK reinforcement gives it substantially higher tensile strength and stiffness than non-reinforced grades, making it well suited to demanding electrochemical processes such as redox flow batteries and water electrolysis.

Key features:

Area resistance below 0.25 Ω·cm² (in 0.5 M H₂SO₄) – among the lowest in the fumasep range
Conductivity above 60 mS/cm (in 0.5 M H₂SO₄)
Ion exchange capacity of 1.11–1.22 meq/g
Young’s modulus above 700 MPa and tensile strength above 40 MPa, from PK reinforcement
Delivered dry, in H⁺ form, on a colorless, fully transparent PET backing foil

Delivery & pretreatment: Supplied as a trans-illuminant, yellow-to-beige membrane on a PET backing layer, in dry, non-activated H⁺ form. Should be unpacked only for direct use and processed immediately after opening. For immediate high performance and lowest resistance, it can optionally be pretreated in 10 wt% H₂SO₄ at 70–100 °C for at least 6 hours, followed by thorough rinsing in demineralized water (pH ~7). For water electrolysis in particular, activation can also be carried out in-situ in the cell without any acid pretreatment.

Main application area: Redox flow batteries, PEM water electrolysis, and other electrochemical processes requiring low-resistance, mechanically robust cation exchange membranes.

Standard Sheets: 12.5 x 12.5 cm and 20 x 30 cm sheets for custom cutting.
Pre-Cut for Our Cells:
- Cut w. alignment holes: For all our single cell test hardware.
- Cut for X-Stack: Perfectly sized for our X-Stack electrolyser.
- Cut for S-Stack: Designed for our S-Stack flow battery.
- Cut with manifold holes: For our 3 and 4-compartment X-Cell.
