About the product

This package contains all parts necessary for completing a full setup with 1/4″ tubing (either flow battery or electrolysis).
1/8″ package is also available.

This package includes bottles, tubing, adapters and fittings that ensures tight sealing between tubing and bottles and between peristaltic tubing and tubing to bottles and flow cell.
For most applications we recommend Pyrex glass bottles. However strong alkaline solutions at higher temperatures can slowly corrode glass and redeposit on electrodes and potentially change the catalytic properties of the electrodes. For this reason we recommend to use PP bottles in strong alkaline solutions.

Suggested setup:

Standard, two channels, two bottles (Redox Flow Battery or Electrolyser)

A two-channel peristaltic pump recirculates from each of the two bottles/reservoirs through the two respective sides of the flow cell.
The three ports of each lid are available for:
- Inlet
- Outlet
- Port 3 either:
  - Gas ventilation for electrolysers
  - Hydraulic shunt, connecting the two reservoirs. This shunt is enabled by the syringe connected to both bottles through the tee fitting.
    For vanadium flow battery chemistries/membranes there is a large volumetric cross-over through the membrane (depending on the membrane). This results in a very large volume difference between the two sides – ultimately this will lead to a battery failure over time. The hydraulic shunt enables this volume difference to level out and maintain the battery integrity (at the cost of a lower faradaic efficiency, that can be minimised by longer tube lengths)
    For electrolysers it can level out volume difference when using porous separators. The volume change comes from small pressure differences between the two sides inside the cell that leads to a high cross-over because of the porosity of the separator.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT GOOD SAFETY PRACTICE WHEN OPERATING ELECTROLYSERS THAT GENERATE H2 AND O2: No matter if two separation units or bottles are used for separating out H2 and O2 on each side, there will always be a transfer of gases from one side to the other (either through solubility in water if the water from both sides is mixed at some point or by cross-over through the membrane/separator). This has the consequence that the head space in bottles with time can become a mix of both H2 and O2 that can reach explosive limits. For this reason it is strongly recommend to:

Keep the head-space in bottles as low as possible – if an explosion occurs the gas volume is as small as possible
Ensure proper ventilation and suction from gas separation units/bottles
Keep setup in enclosures to prevent personal injuries if either a tube burst or an explosion happens – HOWEVER IT IS STRICTLY NEEDED TO HAVE VENTILATION IN THE ENCLOSURE TO AVOID BUILD-UP OF EXPLOSIVE GAS CONCENTRATIONS
ALWAYS make an independent safety assessment of the experimental setup – Recommendations includes
- Always to follow your own guide lines for safety
- Always to follow ATEX rules/guidelines
- Assessment of the amount of gas produced
- Risks for reaching explosive gas limits
- Always assume that all fittings/bottles etc are not gas tight
- Measures to prevent/remove personal injuries if worst case scenario happens
